Open Mind - A Web Extension to Combat Fake News and Political Bias
Open Mind is a web extension designed to combat fake news and political polarization, using cognitive science and machine learning. It works by analyzing your browsing history and detecting the domain of the page you are reading and providing you with a warning and links to more reputable sources. It also offers users a direct analysis of how partisan their reading patterns are in a dashboard on their new tab page that tracks their political browsing history. Finally, underneath articles on their Facebook, Twitter, and Google news feed, it suggests relevant articles that can balance out the perspectives and biases in your reading history.
Open Mind analyzes all the websites that users have visited over the course of the past year and the domains they have accessed, then creates a list of the most reputable. It also alerts users when they share an article on Facebook that they haven't read or read an extensive amount of news that is consistently biased on one side of a topic. Finally, if the article is not deemed to be politically neutral, the user will be notified and can choose to continue reading or not.
Open Mind utilizes machine learning and cognitive science to determine a user's political reading history and then uses that information to suggest articles that can balance out the perspectives and biases in the user's reading history.
